Church History
Over more than one hundred and seventy-two years ago, about ten miles north of Gaffney, South Carolina, on what is known as the Cliffside Highway, near a creek that runs into the Broad River, the legacy of a few baptized Christian believers still stands as Suck Creek Baptist Church.
There are no exact records of our history dates, for we know that our fore-fathers knew little about record keeping. However, it is known that Rev. Peter Humphries, a great Christian leader organized the church and served as Pastor, and from this great establishment, only ten Pastors have served.
After the passing of Rev. Humphries, Rev. Whittenburg was called as the second Pastor; succeeded by Rev. R. W. Norris, Rev. Gamewell Young of Jonesville, South Carolina and Rev. W. R. Lipscomb.
Rev. G. L. McCree, the sixth Pastor, served more than thirty-three years. He was known as the “Big” preacher, in his day. Records show that in 1924, the church was rebuilt under his leadership. Deacons, at this time, were Bros. John Watkins, John Camp, Joe Sarratt, A. B. Bonner, W. H. Camp, Henry Phillips and K. V. Humphries, clerk.
Rev. R. L. Barber of Rock Hill, South Carolina was elected following the passing of Rev. McCree. Under his leadership, the fourth Sunday was added for worship service; Bros. L. J. McCluney, E. Z. Littlejohn and Tom Jefferies were ordained as deacons; The church was remodeled and the church membership increased. Rev. Barber served more than twenty years, before his passing on December 5, 1955.
Rev. J. H. Littlejohn of Gaffney, South Carolina served as Supply Pastor, until Rev. J. C. Mitchell of Belmont, North Carolina was called to serve the church. Rev. Mitchell was only able to serve a short time, because of his health, and on March 3, 1957, he was called home to rest with God. He was loved and admired by all who knew him and many, young men were inspired to preach the gospel, under his leadership.
Serving under the leadership of Rev. Mitchell, Rev. C. V. Owens of Union, South Carolina assumed Pastoral duties on May 10, 1957, as the ninth and youngest minister the church has had in its history.
Among Rev. Owen’s accomplishments were the ordination of nine deacons: Bros. P. A, Proctor, W. T. Petty, Freddis Petty, Rochelle Littlejohn, Willie Proctor, J. B. Camp, Horace Jefferies, Abraham Lincoln and Arthur J. Smith; the church membership increased; the addition of an Educational Building and Baptistry; the paving of the parking lot; the purchase of the first church bus; and the remodeling and addition of our church in 1975.
After serving for twenty years, Rev. Owens, a conscientious Christian leader of high intellectual ability was called to assume Pastoral duties at Hopewell Baptist Church, in Shelby, North Carolina. The church family shared many wonderful experiences with the Owens’ Family.
On January 1, 1980, Rev. Tony Makupson, of Cowpens, South Carolina was elected as Pastor. In keeping with long-time tradition of the church, he, too, has worked towards its progression. Because of his interest and dedication, he has deeply inspired the members with spiritual and physical educational growth, through various organizations added to the church program.
During his administration, his accomplishments have been many. The church has seen growth in innumerable areas. The church budget has increased, many ministries and committees were and have been added and organized such as; The Pastor’s Aide, Y.W.A.s, Brotherhood, Evangelistic Committee, Children’s Ministry, Culinary Ministry, Dance Ministry, Drama Ministry, Men’s Ministry, Praise Team, Single’s Ministry, Women’s Ministry, Youth Ministry, Choirs, a Junior Deacon Board with Bros. Paul Littlejohn as Chairman, Bennie Miller, Bennie Camp, Willie Littlejohn, Larry Parker, Demetrius Fields and Clyde Phillips, as members. And in 2016, there were newly installed deacons—Bros. Calvin Dawkins, Larry Parker, Jose’ Davis, Anthony Dawkins, Sherman Hamrick, A. D. Huskey, Mack Knuckles and Keith Watkins.
Many converts have been added and many hearts have been touched. With proper teaching and training, Pastor Makupson has passionately embraced his calling and his people and has done as God has instructed him through His Word and has “equipped us for the work of serving and building up the body of Christ”. Spiritual gifts have been recognized, developed and utilized for the perfecting of the saints, the work of the ministry and the edifying of the Church Body, with the ultimate purpose of glorifying God in and all that we strive to do. Also, through the divine guidance of God and the inspiration of our Pastor, both past and present—Deacon Arthur J. Smith, Jr. Deacon David Lee, Deacon Horace Jefferies, Bro. Donnie Allen; Sisters—Vanessa Fields, Omigene Proctor, Rosie Watkins, Jestine Lincoln, Meika Jones, Sherry Miller, Lisa Allen, Celena Davis and Wynima Cannon accepted God’s calling into the ministry.
Through the loyalty and untiring dedication of its members and friends dedicated to Christian service, our history seems destined for greater glory. And even until this day and in this year, we rejoice and give praise to God for the will and determination of a strong people who have come this far by faith, through prayer and dedication to God, giving full measure of time and service for the building of the kingdom of God.
Let us continue to forever stand firm in the belief of our then 2018 church motto—“Walking in Victory”, I Corinthians 15:57, “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ”(KJV). With a spirit of determination, perseverance and a set goal in mind, VICTORIOUS becomes our new name.
